Cathedrals
The eighth grade has spent a while on our study of Gothic Cathedrals. Gothic Cathedrals have so much history, they originated from the Romanesque style, this style was more round and soft. Then later on forming into a more gothic style Cathedral with more of a gothic style look. A tremendous amount of time and detail was put into Gothic Cathedrals. Some could even take more than 80 years to build.

This is the footprint of a Cathedral. Usually formed into the shape of the cross on purpose. They call this the footprint because if the cathedral was to be cut in half, it would leave the footprint of a cross. |

Flying Buttresses A Flying Buttress is support system branching from the piers. They have a big job, they support the weight the Cathedral gives out and keeps it from collapsing.

Rose Window
|
Rose Window Coming from the simple round windows of the Romanesque period, these intricate works of glass, metal, and stone flowered into beautiful works of art.
Spires Spires are often the most elegant part of a cathedral. The spire is a structure set atop a tower. In the Middle Ages, the closer the spire's were to the sky, the closer the church was to God.

Gargoyle
Meaning throat. The word refers to the sound of what water makes when it goes down your throat, or through the gullet. Gargoyle's are usually found atop a Cathedral serving as a drain. Later on, they were made into beastly animals. |
